The saints Roch and Sebastian, tempera on gold ground on panel, 127 x 70 cm, integrale frame
Provenance: European private collection Literature: Catalogo Venezia e la peste: 1348–1797, exhibition catalogue, Venice 1997, pp. 225–26 Exhibited: Venezia e la peste: 1348–1797, Venice 1979 The quality of the execution and several formal aspects suggest an artist from the circle of Girolamo di Giovanni, who did the frescoes in the sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Macchie in Gagliole in the Marche. Our panel is comparable to the frescoes by the Master of Arnano in the church of San Michele Archangelo in Gagliole. We are grateful to Prof. Alessandro Tomei for confirming the attribution and assisting us in cataloguing this work.
We are grateful to Dr. Alessandro Delpriori for suggesting an attribution to Paolo Bontulli da Percanestro (active in the Marches circa 1490-1530).
